Hi,
I'm self employed with quite a physical job, lots of hands and feet and long days, which I'm wondering whether or not I can carry on with, I'm struggling at the minute to do half of what I used to and everything seems to take twice as long and be twice as painful. I certainly couldn't make a batch of soap at the moment if my life depended on it, luckily I don't need to start production again until the new year. But I have an OT appointment on Friday which I'm hoping will steer me in the right direction in terms of making a decision about the future. Any tips on how to get the most out of it? I've started a list but somebody out there may have some pearls of wisdom to impart for which I would be very grateful. Thanks
Sara

Hi Sara,

Give yourself time to get adjusted on the drugs, this will make a world of difference when they kick in properly. Learn to pace yourself as best as you can. You have a good positive nature that will help immensely. Work up a little routine and and build on it when you see yourself managing. It will happen it just takes time. I was in dire straights when I was diagnosed but I never let it beat me. Take care. Lorna x Smile

I have read your post on the newly diagnosed topic as well as this one. All I can suggest is write out a typical diary for you in a week and also what your job physically entails. You will be amazed at what the OT can offer as help and suggestions.

I do think it is early days yet with your RA and you must not give up hope. I was diagnosed just two years ago and it has been a long hard journey during that time but things have improved from those early dark days. It is very hard to get the medication right and, yes, Methotrexate can take a while to kick in. It was nearly three months for me.

I work full time as an Admin Manager and although my job is supposed to be desk based I do find myself on my feet all the time and up and down stairs. My employers have been brilliant and now let me work from home two days a week. This reduced physical movement has helped me carry on with my job. I rest as much as I can in the evening and weekends. Yes my life has changed out of all recognition and it has taken me time to adjust my lifestyle. I crave for the days that I could go out all day with my Daughter shopping. I have to set myself small goals now. We go out for a shorter period and I sit down quite regularly and then rest for the remainder of the weekend.

I think continuing to run your business is achievable but you will have to come up with a plan where you can rest in between your busy times and, unfortunately, take any help you can get. I am independent also but I have to weigh this up against not being able to do anything.

Being a member of this forum has been a lifeline to me. There is a wealth of information and love and support from people who know exactly what you are going through.

Good luck with the OT and keep us posted.

Jackie

Can I suggest that you look on the main NRAS web site. There is a piece written by an OT which you should find very helpful
